Pinterest Contest

So, generally I only get onto pinterest for workout ideas, fashion inspiration and the occasional do it yourself project if I’m feeling lucky. I just recently entered into a contest put on by Bella Figura letterpress company. the requirements included creating a board titled “My Favorite Place” and adding a picture of that favorite place with a comment including why it was special. As a former flight attendant this came relatively easy to me as Bondi Beach, Australia was the first to pop into my head. The requirements of this contest also included adding 20 more pictures or “pins” that were similar to the original favorite place picture, along with the design of an envelope liner added to the board. Considering the ocean has always fascinated me since I was a child, this contest was an enjoyable one as I browsed through different pins of nostalgic oceanic images. There’s something about the combination of colors of the beach; blue shades of the ocean, greens of vegetation and surrounding trees, the black, grays and browns of the land rocks and the soft cream of the sand. The taste of the salty air and fresh breeze that for a little while allows you to not think about the worsening air pollution plaguing the earth. You see, I thoroughly enjoyed entering this contest because it allowed me to escape. Maybe I wasn’t actually on a beach or by the ocean but for a little while I got wrapped up in the array of beach images that let me escape my reality even for just a bit. I can thank Pinterest for that.

Facebook Phasing Out?

In the current world of evolving technological advances and usage of social medias on the rise, I can’t help but wonder if simplicity is the key to popularity. Facebook is known for it’s ever changing formats and new options but I don’t feel as if it is necessarily good for business. I’ve had a Facebook since 2006 and within the seven years that I’ve been active on it I’ve seen multiple changes and add-ons made available for all users. Changes like the cover photo option or the recent advertisements on the newsfeed. I can honestly say that I’ve become fed up with all of these changes considering most of them are drastic concerning the format and I have to get used to the “new look”. Then after about 3 months it changes again and I know I’ll have to adjust yet again to the change (in my mind I’m simultaneously eye rolling). It seems as the Facebook is becoming more intricate with the details and emulating the adolescent obsession of MySpace rather than the sophisticated social media originally intended for college students only. As a college student myself, I’m not so bothered by the fact that it has opened up to all users not just college students, but more bothered by the fact that it is becoming less appealing with all of the added advertisements and visual static I’m forced to view on my newsfeed. And although the numbers don’t back my opinion with 1.11 billion users, I can’t help but wonder if I’m the only one getting tired of all the unnecessary added shenanigans. Twitter and Instagram on the other hand have both been on the rise and are both simplistic; Twitter just involving status updates and short characters, Instagram involving just picture updates. Although Facebook is still the number one most used social media with it’s multiple options for self-expression and capabilities, I’d like to predict that it won’t be as popular once social medias like Twitter and Instagram increase their user numbers. It would only be natural for people as well as businesses and brands to go where the masses have manifested themselves. In order to get publicity and awareness it’s important to not only utilize the social medias appropriately but to know where people are looking.

It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know

As a Junior in college at 24 years of age, I look back and realize how wrong I was about what it took to starting a career. All through high school I felt the pressures of the future and what decisions I would need to make in order to be “successful”. Most of my friends of course knew exactly what they wanted to do after high school, what college they were going to attend, and what types of scholarships they were already applying for. Meanwhile, I sit as a quiet listener, unsure and apprehensive about what exactly I wanted to do. And college is so expensive, how could I afford it? Especially with an unknown major… In the fortunate chain of events, I went to an academy to become a flight attendant and soon obtained a job with a regional airline based out of Newark airport in New Jersey. i worked their for almost five years and had the time of my life traveling and meeting amazing people along the way. On top of that, I had enough time to think about my future and was confident with wanting to get into Advertising. Thankfully, I saved up enough money to take two years of classes at Lansing Community College while still working full time as a flight attendant. Was it a lot of work? Definitely. But more than worth it. Now that my feet are back on the ground in the beautiful state I grew up in, going to an amazing University (go Spartans), I can see that obtaining a career and becoming successful is not just around what you know, but more importantly, who you know. To have a path to success, you need to put yourself out there and make connections! Be yourself, be social, be professional and you will have great potential to succeed. Thanks to my experience as a flight attendant and continuing my journey through college, my focus is more accurate and I am more confident than ever on how to create a bright future for myself. The world is my oyster and I intend to take advantage.
